TEMPLE OF ILLUMINATION'S PROTOCOL

Protocol of the Temple of Illumination
 
1.) The Temple of Illumination is an organization dedicated to meeting all of the healthy needs and desires of all of its members first and foremost and then the community at large. We are pro organic raw vegan lifestyle oriented and everyone is welcome to come, learn, share and join www.templeofillumination.ning.com
 
2.) Every member is expected to have a mission and vision statement on file.

3.) Any member who has ongoing events / classes here is expected to have a mission and vision statement on file in relation to the purpose of their events.

4.) Every member should have an individual flyer for their events here along with the temple's calendar of events on the reverse side of their flyer in order to cross promote the other events at the temple.

5.) Every member who has an event here should be promoting to at least 10 meetup groups of choice within a 10 mile radius of 11238 zip code no later than 5 days in advance of that event and have two individuals rsvp immediately behind the suggested meetup groups  and email Dr. Natural your 10 meetup groups [hyperlinked], then call Dr. Natural at 718-783-3465.

6.) Every member should be cross promoting / cross supporting the events, classses, products, services, etc. of all the members of the temple and we need to create a brochure and directory of all its members and we will be having weekly and or monthly meetings for all of our members to facilitate this process.

7.) At each event everyone:
a.) must sign in along with their phone number / email address.
b.) formal introductions must takes place at the beginning of each event stating name, what you do, what are you suppose to be doing and what area in your life do you need support [with someone documenting who needs what type of support in what area [s] and who will be accountable for assisting that individual].

8.) Everyone at each class / event should be responsible for completing a known / documented task[s] before the next event / class that pertains to their individual[s] and / or the group's goal[s].

9.) Every member should devote sometime to the decluttering process of the temple on a weekly basis [ideally at least two hours per week - incentive is that you get first choice of the very valuable items we are giving away].

10.) We are seeking individuals who are good at selling on ebay / craigslist to sell our excess valuable items.

11.) The ground floor of the temple is off limits unless invited by Dr. Natural.

12.) We are open to sugesstions / improvements based upon what was stated above and any other sugesstions you may have as far as types of events, classes, products, services, improvements, etc. you desire to see at the temple.

OM - its Meaning and Significance


OM

If you attend a yoga class, it is very likely that the teacher starts the class by reciting the sound of OM three times. Most teachers like to chant OM at the end of the class as wll. That’s how I start and end the classes tha I teach. So, the natural question that comes up is, "why chant OM and what is the significance of this sound?". Here is a brief explanation of the meaning and significance of OM.
OM is considered to be the ‘primordial sound’. Even before the material creation came into existence there was only the natural humming energy which resembled the sound of OM. Today, we know that one form of energy can be converted to another form – electricity to sound, electricity to heat, heat to electricity etc. According to the famous equation by Einstein – E=mc2, all matter is nothing but waves of energy. So, when the ‘powers that be’ decided to create this material universe, they were able to use the ever-present humming sound vibration of OM to manifest this creation. This same vibration continues to exist all around us and even inside us. The inner sound is given the name "antar-naada" (the inner sound) which can be heard when we can tune in to our pure inner self.

The OM mantra has been mentioned in many of the ancient texts related to yoga. In many of the Upanishads, it is revered as representing everything that is manifest and yet has its roots in the unmanifest. The Mandukya Upanishad (MU), in particular, is fully devoted to the discussion of OM. In the Upanishads, OM is mentioned as being the same as Brahman (the supreme consciousness).

Meaning of OM

The Sanskrit word OM (also written as AUM) is a composite of three letters "A" (? - like the first sound in ‘aware’ , "U" (? -as in ‘foot’ and "M" (?? - as the last sound in ‘mum’). According to MU, the three letters A, U and M represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states. The silence between successive repetitions of the mantra represents the fourth state called ‘turiya’ (literally the ‘fourth’ in Sanskrit), a state that transcends these three states. These three states correspond to the conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious states of the mind. A few other commonly mentioned interpretations of the letters A, U and M are given below:
  • According to yoga, Samkhya and many other scriptures, the whole material creation, including human mind and body are a manifestation of the ‘mula prakriti’ (primordial nature) which is composed of the three gunas – sattva, rajas and tamas. The three letters of OM thus correspond to the three gunas as follows:
  • A = tamas (darkness, inertia, ignorance)
  • U = rajas (passion, activity, dynamism)
  • M = Sattva (purity, truth, light)
The silence between the two AUM sounds represents the pure consciousness, a state which transcends the three gunas (called ‘trigunaatit’ – beyond gunas)
  • A = Brahma (the creator), U = Vishnu (the sustainer) and M = Shiva (the destroyer); the silence between two OM sounds = the substratum or the reality that lies beyond the trinity
  • A = Present, U = Past, M = future; silence between sounds = the reality beyond time and space

    Other names for OM

    In some of the Upanishads, OM is referred to as ‘udgita’ (the uplifting chant) or ‘Omkara’. In Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and in some Upanishads it is mentioned as ‘Pranava’. Patanjali mentions it as a ‘vachaka’ or the representative symbol for Ishvara (the Lord). Other words used for OM include ‘taraka’ (the one that helps us cross the ocean of this perishable life), ‘akshara’ (indestructible or imperishable), and the Brahman (supreme consciousness) in sound form called ‘Shabda Brahman.

    OM in Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

    In chapter 1 (Samadhi Pada) of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali gives us the concept of Ishvara as "Ishvara is the supreme Purusha, unaffected by any afflictions, actions, fruits of actions or by any inner impressions of desires." (translation by Sw. Satchidananda) (sutra 1.24). The following sutras provide us an insight into the sacred symbol OM:
  • sutra 1.27: "The word expressive of Ishvara is the mystic sound OM (pranava)"
  • sutra 1.28: "To repeat it with reflection upon its meaning is an aid."
  • sutra 1.29: "From this practice all the obstacles disappear and simultaneously dawns knowledge of the inner Self."
  • sutra 1.30: "Disease, dullness, doubt, carelessness, laziness, sensuality, false perception, failure to reach firm ground and slipping from ground gained – these distractions of the mind-stuff are the obstacles."
  • sutra 1.31: "Accompaniments to the mental distractions include distress, despair, trembling of the body, and disturbed breathing."
As we can see from these sutras by Patanjali, chanting of OM can make us free from obstacles (defined in sutra 1.30) and provide us a glimpse of the inner self.
Even though chanting of OM as a mantra by itself is advocated in the above sutras, it is common to use OM in conjunction with other mantras. In some cases, it is added at the beginning of a shloka ; for example – "OM namo shivaya, OM bhur, bhuvah, svaha" etc. In other cases it is also added at the end of a phrase – e.g., Hari OM. Most of the mantras in the vedas also start with OM. In the spiritual tradition, those who wish to meditate on a regular basis get a personal mantra from their spiritual teacher. This personal mantra may or may not include OM as a part of the mantra.

How to chant OM

As Patanjali states in sutra 1.28, OM should be chanted keeping its meaning and significance in mind. Since OM is the representative sound and symbol for Ishvara, it is important to keep the essence of Ishvara (sutra 1.24) in mind while chanting OM. The technique for chanting OM is given below:
Sit in a comfortable cross-legged seated posture with the spine upright, head, neck and spine in a vertical (if comfortable) alignment. Close the eyes and take a deep inhalation. While exhaling start uttering the OM sound. Begin by feeling the vibration of the "O" sound building up in the navel area and traveling upward. As you continue the chant, feel the vibration moving upward toward the base of the throat. When the vibration reaches the throat area, convert the sound to a deep humming sound of "M". Continue to feel the vibration moving upward until it reaches the crown of the head (called Sahasrara Chakra). You may repeat this process two or more times. At the end of the final chant, continue to sit still and feel the vibration of the OM sound permeating the whole body – every single cell of the body.

Benefits of chanting OM

The continued recitation of OM (called Udgita Pranayama) fills one with peace, calmness, tranquility and serenity. When we recite it with the understanding that OM is nothing but a representation of Ishvara, it brings us closer to our true nature, our own pure self. As mentioned above, OM is the primordial sound and this entire creation is a manifestation of this mystic sound. It represents the cosmic prana (the vital energy) and the air we breathe. Meditating on these thoughts can bring us closer to other human beings and lift the veil of separateness.

What is Happiness?


Most people think of emotions as defining happiness. This is one part of happiness. Scientists call it “positive affect” and “negative affect” meaning feeling happy, joy, sad, angry, stress, or other emotions. Another important way of defining happiness is “satisfaction with life,” meaning whether you are living the best life for you and feel your life is worthwhile.  These are usually the only two things used to define happiness. However, the conditions in which we live  influence on our affect and satisfaction with life.  By including the conditions of happiness in a definition of happiness, one acknowledges the internal and external are integrated.  The Happiness Initiative uses the domain approach created by Bhutan, and adds one domain: work experience. This way, when you look at your own happiness, you can see where you have balance or imbalance in your life that fosters or undermines your affect and satisfaction with life.  The conditions of happiness we use to define happiness (along with affect and satisfaction with life!) are:
Overall Satisfaction with Life –  satisfaction with life and prevalence of positive and negative emotions.
Material Well-being - income, financial security, the level of debt, employment security, and the quality of housing
Environmental Quality - quality of their water, air, soil, forest cover, biodiversity, access to green areas and transportation.
Governance – involvement, responsibility and, honesty in government
Community Vitality – relationships, sense of belonging, safety, volunteerism
Cultural Vitality - spectatorship and participation in cultural and sports events
Education and Learning – participation in formal and informal education
Physical Health - health policies and self-rated health
Time Balance – balance of time between leisure and work, enjoyment of life activities
Psychological Well-being – optimism, self-esteem, sense of competence
Workplace Experience - employment satisfaction, job conditions, productivity and compensation

Why “happiness?”
The word “happiness” often provokes some skepticism in the academic world.  What does it mean?  Is it too shallow?  Our meaning is a wider sense of well-being based on a holistic understanding of human needs—health, social connection, community involvement, education, access to arts and culture, a sustainable environment, good and transparent government.  The word happiness resonates with people in a way that well-being sometimes does not. However, for the purposes of some projects and with some people, the terms well-being, quality of life or holistic sustainability may be better received.
Can you really measure happiness?
The possibility of scientific assessments of personal happiness is a relatively new development, but this science has now become quite reliable and its findings have become very consistent over time. Both brain wave studies and reports from friends and acquaintances basically confirm self-assessments of happiness for individuals.  The World Values Survey and the Gallup-Healthways survey have been measuring national happiness scores for many years using questionnaires developed by leading happiness scientists.  Their survey sizes have been robust and their scores have shown remarkable consistency.  Questions have been developed which scientists believe offer reliable information about life satisfaction across cultural divides.  Our survey is a carefully vetted compendium of many of the most reliable questions from international surveys.
What do I get from taking the survey?
When you complete the survey, you will receive an instantaneous well-being score (!) for each of the 10 domains and you will be able to compare your score with the median results for others who have taken the survey. You will find that the 75 questions in this survey will encourage you to think about your life in new ways and about what you can do to be happier.
How long does the survey take?
The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete and you cannot stop and start over, so do the survey when you have a period of free time. It is comprehensive survey that allows it to give you a comprehensive picture of your well-being in comparison to others.
What are the results used for?
Overall data from this survey will be analyzed and provided to media but your individual data will not be revealed to others. We ask for demographic data so we can analyze overall results, but we do not ask for your name, address, etc. Your privacy will be protected.
We follow the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC (European Union): Personal data collected for this survey is used only for the purposes of the project and as a part of an aggregate. All data is kept secure and individual responses are not shared.

Three Fun and Easy Things Science Says Will Make You Happier

Research tells us about 1/3 of your happiness is predetermined (your “set point”). De Neve, 2012.  The rest – your thinking and the circumstances around you – you can change. Here are some things you can do to increase your happiness. Conducting a happiness initiative is a way to change your circumstances to better support your happiness.
 
 
1) Sit Silently for 5 minutes a day. Turn off the laptop, cellphone and television.  Make yourself comfortable and just sit for 5 min, observing and not judging your thoughts. Close your eyes if you can, or keep focused on any object about 2-3 feet in front of you. If you find yourself deep in thought, simply observe this and then come back to the moment.

2) Practice gratitude
: every morning and every night, list five things for which you are thankful on paper or in your thoughts. These might be as simple as how good the pillow feels under your head or the really yummy lunch you had, or something much grander. It is the act of gratitude that counts. 

3) Give every day
with a small act of kindness to someone in their presence or so they know it is you who gave. This may be as simple as smiling at the cashier or saying thank you to a co-worker or boss. Once a year, or if you are inclined, once a month or week, volunteer with a community organization or do something on your own or with neighbors to increase the well-being of others in your community.
