Spike Lee‘s iconic film Do The Right Thing is celebrating its silver anniversary this year. And to help commemorate the impact of the film, Uncle Spike’s hosting a block party this Saturday in Bed-Stuy, where he will no doubt come face-to-face with the very gentrifiers of Brooklyn that he’s been so openly speaking out against. But that’s neither here nor their. Head on down to Stuyvesant Ave. between Lexington and Quincy from 12:00pm-6:00pm to take part in the festivities and make the inaugural “Do The Right Thing Day” one to be remembered. Just don’t go stepping on anyone’s Jordans. You ain’t ready for that.

1973 in Kingston, Jamaica was an absolutely insane time in musical history. Bob Marley and his label Island Records were at the peak of their powers, dub music and deejaying were emerging from a reggae subculture, and new configurations of R&B and calypso were lighting up dance clubs around the city. Enter THIRD WORLD, a group of friends who found their own place in this rich ecosystem, “seamlessly fusing reggae with soul and pop” (Billboard). They caught Marley’s eye, were asked to tour in support of the Wailers, and the rest is history. Forty-plus years and ten GRAMMY nominations later, they are as cool, steady and easy as ever.
Last year they lost their beloved leader William “Bunny Rugs” Clarke, but the magnificent AJ Brown took on lead vocals and they have risen like the phoenix from the ashes, discovering new corners of the same time-tested grooves. Brooklyn is home to the largest Jamaican population anywhere other than Kingston. The faithful will be out in force, so come early to this one.
Opening the evening is AWA SANGHO, “the Golden Voice of Mali.” Born near Timbuktu and raised in the Ivory Coast, Sangho carries the rich tradition of West African song in her heart and lungs.

AFROPUNK presents The Triptych
Vintage Trouble, The Skins, and The Triptych will be streamed live starting at 7:30 ET. Watch here or atLincolnCenter.org/LC-Live.
Described by the New York Times as “the most multicultural festival in the U.S.,” the word “AFROPUNK” has become synonymous with “open-minded,” “non-conforming,” and “unconventional,” placing the institution at the epicenter of urban culture inspired by alternative music.
Vintage Trouble is a sensational, soulful four-man band whose live shows feel like a sweet Southern revival mixed with a downtown edge.
The Skins are an infectious Brooklyn-based band whose ages range from 15-21. They play like old pros, offering a soulful interpretation of rock that today’s audiences crave, while proving age doesn’t matter.
Singer-songwriter Jillian Hervey and instrumentalist and producer Lucas Goodman mirror the rich melting pot of New York cultures. Citing A Tribe Called Quest and Sergeant Pepper–era Beatles as early influences, LION BABE identifies with a generation brought up on the internet.
The Triptych, a documentary series highlighting outspoken visual artists of our time, profiles the culturally resonant voice of Kenyan-born sculptor and artist Wangechi Mutu. Based in Brooklyn, Mutu’s acclaimed Afrofuturist works explore feminism, globalization, and the post-imperialist age.
