What is Self-Transcendence? Definition and 6 Examples (+PDF)

Self-transcendence: it’s a term you’ve probably heard before.

However, if you’re like me, you never had a good grasp on exactly what it meant.

You might have a hazy idea of “transcending” being akin to “rising above” and think of the concept as rising above oneself, but you don’t really know what it is beyond that.

If this describes you as well as it described me, you’ve come to the right place! In this piece, we will define self-transcendence, look at its components and characteristics, think of some examples, and explore how it can be achieved.

What is the Meaning of Self-Transcendence?

Although people may view self-transcendence in ways that vary based on their own values, the general idea behind it is the same. Self-transcendence is, at its core, about transcending (or rising above) the self and relating to that which is greater than the self. In simpler terms, it is the realization that you are one small part of a greater whole, and acting accordingly.

That which is greater than the self can be a range of things: human beings in general, nature, the universe, divine power, etc. It doesn’t matter what the greater thing is, only that there is something greater than the self.

Self-Transcendence in Psychology

Self-transcendence could be considered the neglected younger sibling of self-actualization; the concept of self-actualization has been around for quite a while and was well-known for its place on top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (at first, anyway—more on that later).

However, it has not been completely ignored. Researchers who are interested in human development, spirituality, and positive behavior traits are quite familiar with the concept and have incorporated it into their work. In particular, those associated with Maslow’s work on human needs will be well-acquainted with it.

Abraham Maslow on Self-Transcendence and Needs

For many years, self-actualization dominated Maslow’s famous Hierarchy of Needs. For a quick refresher, here is the hierarchy as it was:

Self-actualization is at the top, with esteem below it, then love/belonging, then safety, and physiological needs at the bottom. This indicates that physiological needs are vital for survival and that they must be sated before one can move up towards actualization and fulfillment. In his early work, Maslow considered self-actualization the pinnacle of human development and the highest human need: the realization of one’s full potential.

Self-actualization is indeed a lofty (and worthy) goal of development and should not be cast aside in favor of the shiny new need, but self-transcendence is truly the “next level” of development; it is other-focused instead of self-focused and concerns higher goals than those which are self-serving.

Maslow describes the importance of transcendence thusly:

“Transcendence refers to the very highest and most inclusive or holistic levels of human consciousness, behaving and relating, as ends rather than means, to oneself, to significant others, to human beings in general, to other species, to nature, and to the cosmos”

(Maslow, 1971, p. 269).

According to Maslow, self-transcendence brings the individual what he termed “peak experiences” in which they transcend their own personal concerns and see from a higher perspective. These experiences often bring strong positive emotions like joy, peace, and a well-developed sense of awareness (Messerly, 2017).

Someone who is highly self-transcendent may also experience “plateau experiences” in which they consistently maintain or enter a state of serenity and higher perspective (Messerly, 2017).

Maslow’s addition of self-transcendence to the pyramid is not always noted in the literature when his theory is cited, but it has managed to make its way through the research community nonetheless. It has been considered quite frequently in many research threads but is perhaps most prominent in the nursing research community.

We explore this further in The Science of Self-Acceptance Masterclass©

Self-Transcendence in Nursing

Self-transcendence is a particularly important topic in nursing. Nursing is one of the few occupations that demands two simultaneous perspectives: a close, detail-oriented perspective on the here and now, and a broader, more holistic and optimistic perspective.

It is also a unique context for self-transcendence, in that it is something that is possible, desirable, and achievable in a team context for both the patient and the nurse. It can act as both encouragement and inspiration for the patient to achieve wellness, and as motivation and purpose for the nurse is acting as a caregiver.

Indeed, research has shown it to do just that; nurses who have achieved high levels of self-transcendence are more engaged, dedicated, and absorbed in their work than those with low self-transcendence (Palmer, Quinn Griffin, Reed, & Fitzpatrick, 2010). Further, interactions between nurses and patients can facilitate self-transcendence in patients, improving their health and their global well-being (Haugan, 2013).

This focus on self-transcendence in nursing came about when nurse and researcher Pamela Reed outlined her theory on the subject.

Pamela Reed’s Self Transcendence Theory

Reed (1991) defines self-transcendence as “expansion of self-conceptual boundaries multidimensionally: inwardly (e.g., through introspective experiences), outwardly (e.g., by reaching out to others), and temporally (whereby past and future are integrated into the present).” She later added another type of expansion: transpersonal expansion, in which the individual connects “with dimensions beyond the typically discernible world” (Reed, 2003).

According to Reed’s theory, people can be considered open systems (as opposed to closed systems, which do not take in new information and are not open to change) whose only obstacle between themselves and self-transcendence is the boundary they impose upon themselves.

Humans need some conceptual boundaries, of course, but the expansion of these boundaries outward to include more of the environment, more human beings, etc., puts people in a state of greater connectedness with their environment and encourages a sense of “wholeness” they may not otherwise have (Reed, 1991).

This state of expanded consciousness is what Reed calls a developmental imperative; like Viktor Frankl and Abraham Maslow, Reed’s theory posits that self-transcendence is a natural and desired developmental stage, which people must reach in order to be fulfilled and to have a sense of purpose (Reed, 2003).

Three important concepts form the core of Reed’s theory, including self-transcendence; the other two concepts are:

  • Vulnerability: the awareness of one’s own mortality that develops with age, health issues, and crises.
  • Well-being: the sense of being healthy, whole, and generally fulfilled and satisfied with one’s state.

These three concepts are vital pieces of the three major hypotheses of Reed’s theory:

  1. Older adults (especially those nearing the end of their life) will generally have higher self-transcendence than younger people (note: this has been supported by research, e.g., Ellermann & Reed, 2001).
  2. Conceptual boundaries can fluctuate, and will likely affect well-being when they do.
  3. The relationship between vulnerability, self-transcendence, and well-being is modified and facilitated by a person’s own traits and characteristics and the environment in which they are situated (Reed, 1991).

This theory has mostly been accepted by the nursing community, and research has shown that self-transcendence plays an integral role in healing and in dignified acceptance of the end of life.

One of the major ways in which self-transcendence can impact end-of-life experience is through spirituality.

Self-Transcendence and Spirituality

Self-Transcendence and SpiritualityIt is easy to see how self-transcendence and spirituality are connected—one of the inherent qualities of self-transcendence is the expansion of one’s consciousness beyond the self, to something higher.

That “something higher” is often divine or spiritual in nature. Many achieve self-transcendence through their faith in God, while others may achieve it through recognition of some system of spirituality or idea of the soul.

This faith or spirituality can help individuals find the meaning that will fulfill them and propel them to transcendence. Research has even shown that in elderly patients, the caregiver’s own spirituality had a positive impact on the patient’s well-being (Kim, Reed, Hayward, Kang, & Koenig, 2011).

According to Viktor Frankl, transcendence is rooted in our spirituality, and spirituality is the part of humanity that separates us from all other species. One cannot become a fully actualized and “whole” person with reaching self-transcendence, and that requires the individual to come to a satisfactory conclusion about their place in the higher order of things (Wong, 2016).

Although today’s researchers generally don’t adhere to the idea that spirituality is a must to reach self-transcendence, it is certainly a significant aspect of transcendence for many, and it can vary across a broad spectrum of beliefs.

6 Examples of Self-Transcendence

The quintessential example of self-transcendence is undoubtedly Viktor Frankl’s experience in the concentration camps of World War II.

Despite his great personal suffering (and frequently having few or none of the hierarchy needs met)—or perhaps because of it—Frankl found a higher purpose in his life. He was able to put his own needs and interests aside and see the big picture and how he fits into it.

Many prisoners in the camps succumbed to despair and dehumanization, losing their fight for life, liberty, and a sense of self; however, some in the camps actually seemed to retain or even further develop their sense of self and find or reaffirm their life’s purpose. These rare individuals are another case study in self-transcendence.

Of course, one does not need to undergo prolonged suffering to reach self-transcendence; according to Maslow, it can be reached by anyone.

It’s hard to pinpoint other examples of self-transcendence, but its four characteristics will ensure that you know it when you see it:

  1. A shift in focus from the self to others – this shift from selfishness and egoism to consideration of the needs of others is a marker of self-transcendence and is the most salient and important feature.
  2. A shift in values – those who have achieved self-transcendence no longer find themselves driven by extrinsic motivation, or external rewards and demands, but by intrinsic motivation (the reward for an activity is the activity itself).
  3. An increase in moral concern – self-transcendence brings with it a more intensive focus on doing what is right.
  4. Emotions of elevation – these experiences of higher-order emotions can be triggered by all three of the characteristics described above; the emotions include awe, ecstasy, amazement, feeling uplifted, feeling elevated, etc. (Wong, 2017).

If you know anyone who is constantly working to meet the needs of less fortunate others, who is driven not by money or rewards but by an internal drive and is always concerned with doing the right thing, you likely have an example of self-transcendence right in front of you!

How to Achieve Self-Transcendence

If you want to achieve self-transcendence for yourself, there are ways to go about it. It’s not an easy path, as it represents the highest heights of human development, beyond even Maslow’s rarely achieved self-actualization.

However, there are a few things you can do to propel your development and reach toward self-transcendence:

  1. Discover what puts you into “theta” (the quiet and peaceful state just between asleep and awake) and harness it to enter the inspirational and expanded state more often.
  2. Practice meditation, whether through the stereotypical sitting on a cushion with crossed legs or through mindful activities (mindful listening, mindful walking, mindful eating, etc.).
  3. Make time to get creative, and allow it to lead to inspiration, new experiences, and self-transcendence.
  4. Keep a journal, even if you’re not a strong writer—especially if you’re not a strong writer. Put your thoughts and feelings onto paper to separate yourself from them.
  5. Get out of the house and go where you are closest to nature; allow yourself to “commune” with nature, finding inspiration, healing, and perhaps a sense of transcendence through nature.
  6. Engage in “shadow work”—make time to reflect and dive into your deepest, darkest parts. It’s vital to acknowledge and address that which is worst in us as well as that which is best in us.
  7. Practice excellence—in whatever you do, wherever you go, whoever you’re within your day-to-day life. It doesn’t really matter what it is (as long as it’s not harmful to anyone), all that matters is that you’re doing what you do well (Eckl, 2017).

Further, author Stephanie Flood proposes five creative ways to achieve self-transcendence inspired by Buddhism:

  1. Explore basic meditation techniques—even if you’re an experienced meditator!
  2. Empower yourself with knowledge and wisdom to build your awareness.
  3. Don’t be afraid of the journey—spiritually or physically—to find insight.
  4. Find your own spiritual techniques that bring you closer to your higher purpose and your ideal self.
  5. Raise your vibrations (i.e., live in a positive and transcendence-conducive environment)

Although these tips can help, the most important factor in achieving self-transcendence is simply an awareness and openness to the idea. When we open ourselves up to the good in life, we cannot help but be changed by the experience. Keep your mind and your heart open to self-transcendence, and you will have taken the first and most vital step to achieving it.

Measuring Self-Transcendence

measuring Self-Transcendence

Self-transcendence is another one of those tricky constructs to measure, but there are ways to do it.

It can be measured indirectly (through increasing spirituality, intrinsic motivation, and connectedness with something greater) or directly through a scale. Two such scales are presented below.

Self-Transcendence Scale

The Self-Transcendence Scale (STS) was developed by Pamela Reed in 1986. It consists of 15 items adapted from the Developmental Resources of Later Adulthood (DRLA) scale. This scale is one-dimensional, considering only a comprehensive sense of self-transcendence, and measures this construct by questioning the respondent on several characteristics of a mature life.

The items are rated for how well they describe the respondent on a scale from 1 (not at all) to 4 (very much), with a score of 1 indicating the lowest possible level of self-transcendence and 4 indicating the greatest possible level of self-transcendence. Sample items include:

  • Being involved with other people or my community when possible.
  • Adjusting well to changes in my physical abilities.
  • Able to move beyond things that once seemed so important.
  • Letting others help me when I may need it.

This scale has proven to be adequately valid and reliable and is a good choice for researchers interested in measuring self-transcendence (Haugan, Rannestad, Garåsen, Hammervold, & Espnes, 2011; Reed, 1986).

Cloninger’s Self-Transcendence Scale

This scale is nestled within Cloninger’s more broad assessment, the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI; 1993). It is a part of the Character portion of the TCI, which measures “self-concepts and individual differences in goals and values, which influence voluntary choices, intentions, and the meaning and salience of what is experienced in life” (Cloninger, 2015).

Specifically, the self-transcendence scale measures “the extent to which individuals conceive themselves as integral parts of the universe as a whole” (Cloninger, 2015). Those with high self-transcendence are thought to be more spiritual, unpretentious, humble, and fulfilled than those who are low in self-transcendence.

This scale can only be accessed through Cloninger’s website, and usage of the tool requires training for researchers and certification for clinicians.

9 Quotes on Self-Transcendence

The quotes below come from a wide range of sources, from authors and laymen to philosophers and gurus, but they all manage to capture the essence of self-transcendence:

“What would happen if you gave yourself permission to do something you’ve never done before? There’s only one way to find out.”

Gina Greenlee

“I do not have any set goal; my goal is self-transcendence. I always try to transcend myself. I do not compete with the rest of the world. I compete only with myself, and I try to become a better human being. This is my ultimate goal.”

Sri Chinmoy

“Only to the extent that someone is living out this self transcendence of human existence, is he truly human or does he become his true self. He becomes so, not by concerning himself with his self-s actualization, but by forgetting himself and giving himself, overlooking himself and focusing outward.”

Viktor Frankl

“Awe is the emotion of self-transcendence.”

Jonathan Haidt

“The bond that attaches us to the life outside ourselves is the same bond that holds us to our own life.”

William Barrett

“I long to embrace, to include in my own short life, all that is accessible to man.”

Anton Chekhov

“It is essential to our health and happiness that we dedicate ourselves to some kind of mission or purpose that transcends the mundane hustle and bustle of daily living.”

Oli Anderson

“Our present conscious self and our shadow must learn how to coexist. The first step to attaining personal transcendence commences when the conscious mind and the unconscious mind square off and battle for preeminence. A person who achieves self-realization understands the interworking of both their conscious mind and the unconscious mind and integrates their unique dichotomy into their sense of a self.”

Kilroy J. Oldster

“Self-transcendence gives us joy in boundless measure. When we transcend ourselves, we do not compete with others. We do not compete with the rest of the world, but at every moment we compete with ourselves. We compete only with our previous achievements. And each time we surpass our previous achievements, we get joy.”

Sri Chinmoy

7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE & THE 5 AGREEMENTS TO BE HAPPY, HEALTHY & WEALTHY. DR. NATURAL 718-783-3465 JOIN WWW.TEMPLEOFILLUMINATION.NING.COM

What Are the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People?

Covey’s seven habits are composed of the primary principles of character upon which happiness and success are based. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People puts forward a principle-centered approach to both personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Rather than focusing on altering the outward manifestations of your behavior and attitudes, it aims to adapt your inner core, character, and motives.

The seven habits in this book will help you move from a state of dependence, to independence, and finally to interdependence. While society and most of the self-help books on the market champion independence as the highest achievement, Covey argues that it’s interdependence that yields the greatest results.

Interdependence is a more mature, advanced concept. It precludes the knowledge that you are an independent being, but that working with others will produce greater results than working on your own. To attain this level of interdependence, you must cultivate each of the seven habits laid out in the book. The seven habits are as follows:

  1. Be proactive
  2. Begin with the end in mind
  3. Put first things first
  4. Think win/win
  5. Seek to understand first, before making yourself understood
  6. Learn to synergize
  7. Sharpen the saw

This 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book summary will look at each of these habits and show you how to put them into action to become more successful in whatever you want to achieve.

Habit 1: Be Proactive

The first and most fundamental habit of an effective person is to be proactive. More than just taking the initiative, being proactive means taking responsibility for your life. Consequently, you don’t blame your behavior on external factors such as circumstances, but own it as part of a conscious choice based on your values. Where reactive people are driven by feelings, proactive people are driven by values.

While external factors have the ability to cause pain, your inner character doesn’t need to be damaged. What matters most is how you respond to these experiences. Proactive individuals focus their efforts on the things they can change, whereas reactive people focus their efforts on the areas of their lives in which they have no control. They amass negative energy by blaming external factors for their feelings of victimization. This, in turn, empowers other forces to perpetually control them.

The clearest manifestation of proactivity can be seen in your ability to stick to the commitments you make to yourself and to others. This includes a commitment to self-improvement and, by extension, personal growth. By setting small goals and sticking to them, you gradually increase your integrity, which increases your ability to take responsibility for your life. Covey suggests undertaking a 30-day proactivity test in which you make a series of small commitments and stick to them. Observe how this changes your sense of self.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind

To better understand this habit, Covey invites you to imagine your funeral. He asks you to think how you would like your loved ones to remember you, what you would like them to acknowledge as your achievements, and to consider what a difference you made in their lives. Engaging in this thought experiment helps you identify some of your key values that should underpin your behavior.

Accordingly, each day of your life should contribute to the vision you have for your life as a whole. Knowing what is important to you means you can live your life in service of what matters most. Habit two involves identifying old scripts that are taking you away from what matters most, and writing new ones that are congruent with your deepest values. This means that, when challenges arise, you can meet them proactively and with integrity, as your values are clear.

Covey states that the most effective way to begin with the end in mind is to create a personal mission statement. It should focus on the following:

  • What you want to be (character)
  • What you want to do (contributions and achievements)
  • The values upon which both of these things are based

In time, your mission statement will become your personal constitution. It becomes the basis from which you make every decision in your life. By making principles the center of your life, you create a solid foundation from which to flourish. This is similar to the philosophy Ray Dalio presents in his book, Principles. As principles aren’t contingent on external factors, they don’t waver. They give you something to hold on to when times get tough. With a principle-led life, you can adopt a clearer, more objective worldview.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

To begin this chapter, Covey asks you to answer the following questions:

  1. What one thing could you do regularly, that you aren’t currently doing, that would improve your personal life?
  2. Similarly, what one thing could you do to improve your business or professional life?

Whereas habit one encourages you to realize you are in charge of your own life, and habit two is based on the ability to visualize and to identify your key values, habit three is the implementation of these two habits. It focuses on the practice of effective self-management through independent will. By asking yourself the above questions, you become aware that you have the power to significantly change your life in the present.

Thus, having an independent will means you are capable of making decisions and acting on them. How frequently you use your independent will is dependent on your integrity. Your integrity is synonymous with how much you value yourself and how well you keep your commitments. Habit three concerns itself with prioritizing these commitments and putting the most important things first. This means cultivating the ability to say no to things that don’t match your guiding principles. To manage your time effectively in accordance with habit three, your actions must adhere to the following:

  1. They must be principle-centered.
  2. They must be conscience-directed, meaning that they give you the opportunity to organize your life in accordance with your core values.
  3. They define your key mission, which includes your values and long-term goals.
  4. They give balance to your life.
  5. They are organized weekly, with daily adaptations as needed.

The thread that ties all five of these points together is that the focus is on improving relationships and results, not on maximizing your time. This shares sentiments with Tim Ferris who, in The 4-Hour Work Week, argues that time management is a deeply flawed concept.

Habit 4: Think Win/Win

Covey argues that win/win isn’t a technique, it’s a philosophy of human interaction. It’s a frame of mind that seeks out a mutual benefit for all concerned. This means that all agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial, and all parties feel satisfied with the outcome. To embody this mindset, life must be seen as a cooperative, not a competition. Consequently, anything less than a win/win outcome goes against the pursuit of interdependence, which is the most efficient state to be operating within.

Therefore, to adopt a win/win mindset, you must cultivate the habit of interpersonal leadership. This involves exercising each of the following traits when interacting with others:

  • Self-awareness
  • Imagination
  • Conscience
  • Independent will

To be an effective win/win leader, Covey argues that you must embrace five independent dimensions:

  1. Character: This is the foundation upon which a win/win mentality is created, and it means acting with integrity, maturity, and an “abundance mentality” (i.e., there is plenty of everything for everyone, one person’s success doesn’t threaten your success).
  2. Relationships: Trust is essential to achieving win/win agreements. You must nourish your relationships to maintain a high level of trust.
  3. Agreements: This means that the parties involved must agree on the desired results, guidelines, resources, accountability, and the consequences.
  4. Win/win performance agreements and supportive systems: Creating a standardized, agreed-upon set of desired results to measure performance within a system that can support a win/win mindset.
  5. Processes: All processes must allow for win/win solutions to arise.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

If you want to improve your interpersonal relations, Covey argues that you must endeavor to understand a situation before attempting to make yourself understood. The ability to communicate clearly is essential for your overall effectiveness, as it’s the most important skill you can train. While you spend years learning to read, write, and speak, Covey states that little focus is given to training the skill of listening.

If your principles are solid, you’ll naturally want to engage and listen to people without making them feel manipulated. Consequently, it’s through your character that you transmit and communicate what type of a person you are. Through it, people will come to instinctively trust and open up to you. While most people listen with the intent of replying, the proficient listener will listen with the intent to understand. This is known as the skill of empathic listening.

An empathic listener can get into the frame of reference of the person speaking. By doing so, they see the world as they do and feel things the way they feel. Empathic listening, therefore, allows you to get a clearer picture of reality. When you begin to listen to people with the intent of understanding them, you’ll be astounded at how quickly they will open up.

Once you think you’ve understood the situation, the next step is to make yourself understood. This requires courage. By using what you’ve learned from empathic listening, you can communicate your ideas in accordance with your listener’s paradigms and concerns. This increases the credibility of your ideas, as you will be speaking in the same language as your audience.

Habit 6: Synergize

When synergy is operating at its fullest, it incorporates the desire to reach win/win agreements with empathic communication. It’s the essence of principle-centered leadership. It unifies and unleashes great power from people, as it’s based on the tenant that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The real challenge is to apply principles of synergetic creative cooperation into your social interactions. Covey argues that such instances of synergetic interpersonal group collaboration are often neglected but should be part of your daily life.

At its core, synergy is a creative process that requires vulnerability, openness, and communication. It means balancing the mental, emotional, and psychological differences between a group of people and, in doing so, creating new paradigms of thought between the group members. This is where creativity is maximized. Synergy is effectiveness as an interdependent reality. This involves teamwork, team building, and the creation of unity with other human beings.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This seventh habit is all about enhancing yourself through the four dimensions of renewal:

  1. Physical: Exercise, nutrition, and stress management. This means caring for your physical body, eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.
  2. Social/emotional: Service, empathy, synergy, and intrinsic security. This provides you with a feeling of security and meaning.
  3. Spiritual: Value clarification and commitment, study, and meditation. In focusing on this area of your life, you get closer to your center and your inner value system.
  4. Mental: Reading, visualizing, planning, and writing. To continually educate yourself means expanding your mind. This is essential for effectiveness.

To “sharpen the saw” means to express and exercise all four of these motivations regularly and consistently. This is the most important investment you can make in your life, as you are the instrument of your performance. It’s essential to tend to each area with balance, as to overindulge in one area means to neglect another.

However, a positive effect of sharpening your saw in one dimension is that it has a knock-on positive effect in another, due to them being interrelated. For instance, by focusing on your physical health, you inadvertently improve your mental health, too. This, in turn, creates an upward spiral of growth and change that helps you to become increasingly self-aware. Moving up the spiral means you must learn, commit, and do increasingly more as you move upwards and progressively become a more efficient individual.

THE FIVE AGREEMENTS

Be Impeccable With Your Word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t Take Anything Personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Don’t Make Assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always Do Your Best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment. It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to when you are sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Be Skeptical, But Learn to Listen – Don’t believe yourself or anybody else. Use the power of doubt to question everything you hear: Is it really the truth? Listen to the intent behind the words, and you will understand the real message.

Everything You Need to Know About the 5 Tibetan Rites

Bottom line

The Five Tibetan Rites are an ancient yoga practice that consists of a sequence of five exercises performed 21 times a day.

Practitioners report that the program has many physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. These effects are thought to restore a person’s vitality and strength. Due to these benefits, the Five Tibetan Rites are traditionally known as the “Fountain of Youth.”

Let’s explore what the five rites are, how to perform them, and the benefits of this practice.

What are the 5 Tibetan Rites?

The Five Tibetan Rites are thought to be more than 2,500 years old. They were reportedly created by Tibetan lamas (monks), or leaders of Tibetan Buddhism.

In 1985, the rites were first introduced to Western culture in the book “Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth” by Peter Kelder. This book, which describes the program as “youthing,” explains the exercises in detail.

The practice of these exercises is based on the body’s energy. According to practitioners, the body has seven energy fields, or vortexes. These fields are called chakras in Hindu.

It’s said that these fields control parts of the endocrine system, a network of glands and organs that regulate many of the body’s functions, including the aging process.

Practitioners say youth and vigor can be achieved when these energy fields spin at the same rate. People practice the Five Tibetan Rites in order to achieve this.

What are the benefits?

There’s limited research on the benefits of this practice. In general, they’re based on anecdotal reports by practitioners of the Five Tibetan Rites and the opinions of medical professionals and yoga instructors.

Reported benefits include:

Relief from joint pain and stiffness

Improved strength and coordination

Better circulation

Reduced anxiety

Better sleep

Improved energy

A youthful appearance

How to do the 5 Tibetan Rites

While each rite is meant to be practiced 21 times a day, you can begin by doing them less frequently.

During the first week, practice each rite 3 times a day. Add 2 repetitions per rite the following week. Continue adding 2 reps per rite each week until you’re doing 21 rounds of each rite every day.

Rite 1

The purpose of the first rite is to speed up the chakras. It’s common for beginners to feel dizzy during this exercise.

Stand up straight. Stretch your arms outward until they’re parallel with the floor. Face your palms down.

While staying in the same spot, slowly spin your body in a clockwise direction. Without bending your head forward, keep your eyes open and cast toward the ground.

Do 1 to 21 repetitions.

Spin as many times as you can, but stop when you feel slightly dizzy. You’ll be able to spin more over time. It’s best to avoid excessive spinning, which is said to over stimulate the chakras.

Rite 2

During the second rite, it’s important to practice deep rhythmic breathing. You should continue the same breathing pattern in between each repetition.

To do this rite, you’ll need a carpeted floor or yoga mat.

Lie flat on your back. Place your arms at your sides, palms on the floor.

Inhale and lift your head, moving your chin toward your chest. Simultaneously raise your legs straight up, keeping your knees straight.

Exhale and slowly lower your head and legs to the starting position. Relax all your muscles.

Complete 1 to 21 repetitions.

If you have difficulty straightening your knees, bend them as needed. Try to straighten them each time you perform the rite.

Rite 3

Like the second rite, the third rite requires deep rhythmic breathing. You can also practice this rite while closing your eyes, which helps you focus inward.

Kneel on the floor, knees shoulder-width apart and hips aligned over your knees. Straighten your trunk and place your palms on the back of your thighs, below your buttocks.

Inhale and drop your head back, arching your spine to open your chest.

Exhale and drop your head forward, moving your chin toward your chest. Keep your hands on your thighs during the entire rite.

Do 1 to 21 repetitions.

Rite 4

The fourth rite, sometimes called Moving Tabletop, is also done with rhythmic breathing. Your hands and heels should stay in place during the entire exercise.

Sit on the floor and extend your legs straight ahead, feet shoulder-width apart. Put your palms on the floor at your sides, fingers facing forward. Straighten your trunk.

Drop your chin toward your chest. Inhale and gently drop your head back. Simultaneously lift your hips and bend your knees until you’re in a tabletop position, with your head gently tilted back. Contract your muscles and hold your breath.

Exhale, relax your muscles, and return to starting position.

Complete 1 to 21 repetitions.

Rite 5

The fifth rite involves both the Downward-Facing Dog and Upward-Facing Dog poses. For this reason, it’s often called Two Dogs. This move also requires a steady breathing rhythm.

Sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Plant your palms in front of you.

Extend your feet behind you, toes curled and shoulder-width apart. Straighten your arms and arch your spine while keeping the tops of your legs on the ground. Drop your head back into Upward-Facing Dog.

Then, inhale and lift your hips, moving your body into an upside down “V” shape. Move your chin toward your chest and straighten your back into Downward-Facing Dog.

Exhale and move back into Upward-Facing Dog.

Do 1 to 21 repetitions.

To support your lower back, you can bend your knees when moving in between poses.

Safety tips

Like all exercise programs, the Five Tibetan Rites should be done with care. Start with gentle movements and a low number of reps.

Take extra precaution if you have:

Heart or breathing problems. Before trying these exercises, talk to your doctor to find out they’re safe for you to do.

Neurological disorders. Disorders like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis can cause poor balance. If you have one of these conditions, these exercises may not be safe for you to perform.

Conditions that cause dizziness. If you’re prone to dizziness, talk to a doctor before trying the first rite. The spinning motion may aggravate various conditions, including vertigo, circulatory issues, or nausea from medication.

Pregnancy. The spinning and bending movements may not be safe if you’re pregnant.

Recent surgery. The rites may cause complications if you’ve had surgery within the last 6 months.

The bottom line

The Five Tibetan Rites, or the “Fountain of Youth,” are a series of five yoga poses. It’s a traditional practice that’s been done for more than 2,500 years. People perform these rites with the intention of restoring youth and increasing vitality.

For best results, it’s recommended to regularly perform these poses. You can do them alone or with another exercise program.

If you have a health condition or are new to exercise, be sure to check with your doctor before trying these moves.

Why You Should Try Rebounding and How to Get Started

Takeaway

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here’s our process.

What is rebounding?

Rebounding is a type of aerobic exercise that is performed while jumping on a mini-trampoline. Jumps can be fast or slow, and can be mixed with rest or aerobic stepping.

Rebounding can help work the muscles in the legs, increase your endurance, and strengthen your bones, among a number of other benefits. This type of exercise is gaining popularity because it’s gentle on the joints but allows you to work your cardiovascular system without taxing the body.

Read on to learn about the benefits of rebounding, plus safety tips and more.

Why you should try rebounding

Rebounding is a low-impact cardiovascular exercise. It’s generally appropriate for people of all ages, from children to older adults.

Following are some additional benefits of rebounding:

Works the abdominal (core), leg, buttock, and deep back muscles.

May help improve endurance

May stimulate the lymphatic system. Rebounding may help your body flush out toxins, bacteria, dead cells, and other waste products.

May help improve balance, coordination, and overall motor skills.

Supports bone density, bone strength, and bone formation, while decreasing bone resorption, so it may be a good option if you have osteoporosis. Bouncing puts small amounts of pressure on the bones, which helps them grow stronger.

May support pelvic floor health, according to anecdotal reports. Bouncing works the muscles of the deep core that help prevent urinary incontinence and stabilize hip joints.

Weight management options have evolved

Take our quiz to learn more about techniques and tips that will help you achieve your goals.

Safety tips

As with any exercise, it’s a good idea to ask your doctor before you start rebounding. While mini-trampolines do help absorb some of the force you might experience with traditional land exercises, like running, this type of exercise may not be appropriate if you’ve had previous surgeries or have other medical concerns.

When using a mini-trampoline:

Check to ensure that your trampoline is in working order and on a stable surface before each workout to reduce risk for falls or other injury.

Move the trampoline away from the wall or other objects, like furniture.

Be sure to do different types of moves on your trampoline so you don’t overuse the same muscles each time you work out.

Consider purchasing a trampoline with a handlebar for extra stability and balance.

If you have small children, store your trampoline away when not in use or otherwise be sure to supervise children who may play on or around it.

Stop jumping immediately if you notice any shortness of breath, pain, or other warning signs with your health.

You may feel a bit dizzy or lightheaded after your first few times on a mini-trampoline. Your body may just need some time to adjust to this new type of movement, but you should still stop working out if you feel faint or dizzy. If these feelings continue for several workouts, contact your doctor.

How to get started

To try rebounding on your own, you’ll need to purchase a mini-trampoline for home use or join a gym that provides them.

If you plan to purchase one, keep in mind that there are many different types of trampolines. Be sure to choose an adult model that is small enough to fit in a corner of your home. It may be helpful to double check measurements before ordering.

What to look for in a mini-trampoline

The ideal trampoline for rebounding should have sturdy, stable legs. The circumference often falls somewhere between 36 and 48 inches.

It should be able to hold adult weight, at minimum 220 to 250 pounds. You’ll likely notice that larger trampolines can support more weight.

Quiet performance, meaning the springs don’t make noise when you bounce, is another nice feature.

If you’re short on space, you may want to consider a foldable model that easily stows away. There are also some mini-trampolines that come with a handlebar, which can be handy if you’re a beginner. You may even come across a few that come with a built-in tracker to record things like your jumps per minute and calories burned.

How to rebound

Warmup

Begin with a few minutes of easy jumping to warm up your muscles. The idea when you start is to get used to the sensation of jumping. It’s not something you do in your everyday life.

The proper way to jump isn’t what you’d necessarily do naturally. You want to try to stomp down on the trampoline’s surface. And you don’t need to jump very high, just one to two inches is fine. Check out this video for some pointers.

Basic jog

A basic jog on the trampoline is a good beginning exercise. It involves keeping your back straight or, alternatively, leaning slightly backward and lifting your knees in front of you one at a time as you jog in place. Your arms should pump at your sides like they do when you’re running on the ground.

If you’re a beginner, you may only want to lift your knees a couple inches. Once you’ve built up strength, you can progress to high knees, where your thigh becomes parallel to the ground below you.

Advanced jog

Once you get the jogging form down, you can move around on the trampoline. Begins with a basic jog, and then move to a wider stance. You can even move your arms above your head as you continue jogging.

As the workout progresses, jogs from one side of the trampoline to the other. Moving from side to side can help activate different muscle groups.

There are many video routines to consider.

Jumping jacks

Jumping jacks on a rebounder aren’t like normal jumping jacks. When doing jumping jacks on a rebounder, you’ll want to stomp down as you move your legs in and out.

Your torso should be bent slightly forward and your arms don’t need to go overhead. Instead, move them in and then out to your sides as you power down with your legs.

Continue this motion for 2 to 3 minutes.

Pelvic floor bounce

To work your pelvic floor on the rebounder, place a soft, squishy exercise ball between your knees. Then, begin slowly bouncing as you breathe into your pelvis. It may help to place your hands on your pubic bone to focus on this area.

Breathe out as you squeeze your inner thighs together and bounce for 2 to 5 minutes total. Start for a shorter amount of time and extend the time as you build strength.

Intervals

While you can do any of these workouts for any length of time, alternating intense effort with recovery effort may help you burn more calories and improve your overall cardiovascular fitness.

Try jumping with hard effort for 20 seconds and resting or jumping with light effort for 10 seconds. Repeat these intervals for 7 more times.

As you get stronger, you may increase your interval length to a minute or more.

Weights

Once you’re comfortable with jumping, you can increase your effort with a higher intensity workout by adding weights.

If you decide to add weights, start by holding light hand weights (2 to 3 pounds) for only a few minutes and work your way up to heavier weights and a longer duration.

How often should you rebound?

There’s no set guideline for the number of days to incorporate rebounding into your routine. A 2018 study showed that participants who exercised on mini-trampolines for as few as three days a week saw big benefits, like increased running speed.

How long you jump each session is really up to you and your fitness level. You may get many benefits with as little as 15 to 20 minutes of exercise on a mini-trampoline. But, if you’re just starting out with rebounding, you may want to begin with shorter workouts and build as you adjust.

The takeaway

All you need to start rebounding is a basic trampoline. You can find workouts online for free on sites like YouTube, making this a budget-friendly workout.

Whether you’re looking for a low-impact routine or for motivation to kickstart your fitness goals, rebounding may be just what you need to bounce some life back into your exercise routine.
