Throughout this festival, we call on our community to demonstrate solidarity as we unite to support those affected by last week's earthquake in Haiti. CCCADI has partnered with Comuna Caribe in Puerto Rico to provide relief aid. Comuna Caribe has a strong history of working with organizations connected to and on the ground in Haiti. Aid will be distributed to KORAL (Kounbite pou Ranfose Aksyon Lakay), a
local action enforcement committee in the southern region of Haiti, and PAPDA (Plateforme Haïtienne de Plaidoyer pour un Développement Alternatif), a coalition of nine organizations who work toward alternative development in Haiti.
The approach we are taking in partnering with Comuna Caribe will allow our Diasporic community in New York, or from wherever you may be reading this, to support those in need on the island with monetary donations. We will not collect supplies and run the risks of no, or poor, distribution. We will not direct funds to government agencies. We will work with those directly connected to the needs of the people on the ground in the affected area.
Join us at the festival where you can donate to this relief effort for Haiti. You can also donate via Paypal, include "Haiti" in your message to: info@vamosPR.org
Be sure to also join us for our next installment of Sou Sou! Saturdays in the Park on August 28th from 11 am to 5 pm. This event will feature workshops in African Dance, Percussion, Black August Art Therapy and Spoken Word. Families will also be able to watch Mass Transit Street Theater perform "Solid Ground" which uses spoken word to explore issues of adversity.
